Groupware to get vaccine
McAfee plans to bring its antivirus expertise to the groupware market.
McAfee will offer GroupScan and GroupShield for Lotus Development's Notes at the end of the month on its Web site. The products are the first salvo in a strategy to offer native virus protection for groupware applications such as Notes, Microsoft Exchange, and Novell's GroupWise.
GroupScan, for Notes desktops, and GroupShield, for Notes servers, offer native virus detection, quarantine in a special database, and eradication and cleaning. The products can be configured to perform these functions automatically or on demand.
Replication and dynamic messaging technologies found in groupware applications make them particularly susceptible to macro viruses, according to McAfee.
GroupScan and GroupShield support Lotus Notes clients and servers running on IBM OS/2, Novell's NetWare, and Microsoft's Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT.
GroupScan for a Lotus client is priced at $30. GroupShield for a Notes server supporting up to 25 clients is $600. Although the products will be available on the Web site at the end of the month, shipping versions will be available in November.
Products for Exchange and GroupWise are not yet available.
