Great Scott! Back to the Future to become a musical in 2015
Robert Zemeckis' time-travelling comedy will become a musical next year, making its debut in London's West End.
Well looky what we have here. Back to the Future is set to become a musical in 2015, the year in which the second film in the trilogy is set. It's not yet known whether the audience will be kitted out with hoverboards and trainers with power laces.
The musical will debut in London's West End, and will see co-writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale reunite to pen the script, the BBC reports. But it won't be a scene-by-scene recreation. According to Gale, it'll be "true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake."
But fans can expect to recognise plenty from the film, including the music. "We intend to use music from the movie along with brand new songs to make a version of Back to the Future that is fresh, entertaining and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage," Gale said.
"We can't think of a better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film."
The production will be directed by the UK's Jamie Lloyd, whose previous credits include Macbeth and Cyrano de Bergerac. "I was five when I saw Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's landmark movie and have been a huge fan ever since," he said.
He added that the musical will "include illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience."
Last year, Lego got into the time travelling spirit by releasing a DeLorean Time Machine set, complete with figures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly.
