Grab some free comics, Free Comic Book Day is today

Visit your local comic shop on May 7 to pick up a whole bunch of comics for free.

Catch up on your favorite superheroes, video game characters, cartoon families and more on Free Comic Book Day.

Celebrate your love for the Avengers, Doctor Who, Suicide Squad, Hellboy, Archie, the Simpsons, Grumpy Cat and others by picking up free comics from your local comic book store this Saturday, May 7, for Free Comic Book Day.

On the first Saturday each May, comic shops around the world open their doors to fans and readers. Many of the stores also have special events and encourage customers to dress up in cosplay costumes and have a blast with other comic book fans.

This annual event started way back in 2002 when comic book retailer Joe Field suggested a special day dedicated to a big comic book movie's opening weekend. This weekend it's Marvel's superhero movie "Captain America: Civil War," which opened May 6 in the US.

This year, fans can pick up titles such as Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, Civil War II #1 (which features the Avengers), Assassin's Creed, Con Man's Spectrum, Love and Rockets Sampler, Doctor Who: Four Doctors Special, Archie #1, Dark Horse Serenity/Hellboy, Suicide Squad #1 and many more.

For younger readers, there's even a select batch of titles, including SpongeBob Squarepants, Grumpy Cat, Hilda and the Stone Forest, The Pink Panther, Science Comics, The Simpsons Bongo Free-For-All, Strawberry Shortcake, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon, DC Superhero Girls, and the Dark Horse All-Ages Sampler, just to name a few.
