Google's Waze tests carpooling as Otto's self-driving semi trucks hit the road
Until a self-driving car can take you to work, Google is testing out a carpool feature in Waze. Also: Truck drivers could give an old truck some self-driving smarts with the help of a startup.
Self-driving cars can't take us to work yet, but Google is working on a more practical solution: adding a carpool service into the Waze app. It's just a test in the San Francisco area for now, but Uber can't be happy.
We're not too far off from driving alongside self-driving cars on our commute. In fact, one startup is already testing self-driving semi trucks on the road in California. But these are not specially made big rigs. Rather, the company retrofits trucks with the autonomous smarts:
