Google's new look challenges Bing

Google has unveiled a new-look results page, with a range of filters in the sidebar. But is it all a little familiar?

Google is rolling out a new results page. The search behemoth unveiled the new-look sidebar in an official blog post.

Google introduced the new sidebar at the end of last year. Different options now appear there: filter your results by images, video, maps, news or date ranges. The images option includes some cool sub-filters -- fine-tuning your search to those images featuring a face or dominated by a specific colour. Word to the wise: be careful clicking pink if safe search is off.

Filters are a good idea, but many of the options repeat options that have always been, and still are, at the top of the screen. Perhaps the idea is to stick some coloured icons in there and get people using the filters. The new design does look suspiciously like the front end of Microsoft's search engine Bing.

The sidebar is mobile too, with a small arrow appearing to the left of the search box in Google's mobile site. This will toggle the sidebar on and off.
