Did Google's Pixel phones just get completely leaked?
UK electronics retailer Carphone Warehouse appears to have jumped the gun, revealing what could be practically every detail of Google's new flagship phones.
Google's next big event is on October 4 -- more than 24 hours away -- but you may not have to wait to get the scoop on the company's new flagship phones. Carphone Warehouse, the UK electronics retailer, appears to have leaked all the major features of both new devices.
The best alleged look yet at Google's Pixel and Pixel XL phones.
And while we can't vouch for every detail (certainly take them with a grain of salt) they seem to match up fairly well with previous leaks, and sound like they could be legitimate. The retailer has since taken down the relevant pages.
According to Carphone Warehouse (and spotted by 9to5 Google), the 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL will be strikingly similar phones, both in design and system specs. Each will allegedly have a 2.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of memory and either 32 or 128GB of storage underneath a Gorilla Glass 4-covered AMOLED display -- all inside a strikingly iPhone-like metal case with a mirror finish on the upper part of the back.
AMOLED screens aren't just important because they provide vibrant color and deep blacks -- it could allow these phones to participate in Google's Daydream VR initiative.
Each phone has fingerprint sensors around back, like the current Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, but both will allegedly feature optical image stabilization for their 12.3-megapixel, f/2.0 cameras -- an important feature missing from last year's Nexus handsets.
The only major differences between the phones appear to be battery and screen. The 5.5-inch Pixel XL boasts a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution panel and a 3,450 mAh battery, while the 5-inch Pixel allegedly has a 1,920x1,080 screen and a 2,770 mAh cell. Both phones appear to use USB-C charge ports and support quick charging.
Neither Google nor Carphone Warehouse immediately responded to requests for comment.
Assuming this leak is accurate, we still don't know how much you'll pay, when you'll pay it, and whether these handsets are more than the sum of their specs. Google's new Pixel phones are really the coming-out party for the company's artificial intelligence ambitions: The hardware may not matter nearly as much as whether Google's Assistant can help you manage your day.
