Google has finally confirmed when you can expect your Google Nexus 7. If you've ordered the 7GB model you'll have it in your hands by the weekend, but if you're awaiting a 16GB model you'll have to be patient.

The Nexus 7 was unveiled in San Francisco last month and went on sale immediately, but actual delivery dates were kept vague. Retailers promised 19 July, a date that 7GB customers may meet if you're very lucky, as Google has upgraded all buyers to next-day delivery.

Google promises the 7GB model will be delivered by 20 July, with 16GB models following some time next week.

Google informs those who have already placed their order with an email reading, "We wanted to send you an update on your Nexus 7 pre-order. We’ve had incredible demand for the new tablet and are shipping them as quickly as possible. All Nexus 7 8GB orders will ship by July 20, and Nexus 7 16GB orders will ship by next week. We’ve upgraded your shipping to overnight so your your order will arrive sooner.

"Thanks for your patience. Your Nexus 7 will be on its way soon."

That's the first confirmation Google has offered about dates, which is a far cry from what we expect when we buy something online. Heck, the other day I bought one of those little wind-up dogs that does a backflip from an online retailer and I've had three emails telling me when to expect it.

Still, at least Google has upgraded all deliveries to next-day shipping to help get the new tablet into your hands faster. Some lucky punters managed to bag a Nexus 7 early after some retailers jumped the gun last week, and other shops have got their tablets out sooner than Google. The confusion over delivery seems to me to be a sign of the big G's inexperience at selling hardware, but it's not the sort of things you'd expect from a company the size of Google.
