Google honors American workers with Labor Day doodle
Google goes industrial to mark holiday that highlights the social and economic achievements of American workers.
For many in the US, Labor Day is just another holiday -- the last day off from work we will get during the waning days of summer (well, most of you anyway).
Falling each year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is a national holiday that honors the social and economic achievements of American workers. Although already celebrated in dozens of states, it became an official federal holiday in 1894 after the deadly riots of the Pullman Strike, which pitted railway workers against the railroads and US government.
For many, it marks the unofficial end of summer. But for Google, the occasion is more than a chance to get one more barbecue in before autumn's cooler days arrive. To celebrate and remind us of the contributions of workers, the web giant has launched a doodle that men and women building and making repairs to an industrial-like version of the company's familiar logo.
So while you are enjoying this day off from work, take a moment to reflect on those workers who fought for many of the employment benefits many of us take for granted.
