To me, summer is synonymous with salads. And just as I think of bread as an excuse to eat mayonnaise, I think of salad as an excuse to eat avocado. I love avocado, but I am less than enthusiastic about slicing it.

Slice, slice, baby. Progressive International

I know how to strike the pit with a knife blade to extract the pit from the fruit, but when I try to slice the avocado, I wind up making a mess of everything. Which is fine if the goal is guacamole, but less attractive atop my salads and burgers.

This avocado slicer from Progressive International offers an easy fix. The 18/8 stainless-steel blades glide through the fruit smoothly and makes garnish-worthy slices with very little effort. The rubberized handle fits comfortably in your hand and won't slip as you slice. And the whole thing is dishwasher-safe, so cleanup is a breeze.

I've actually used this slicer to prepare avocado for sushi rolls, and it does a more uniform job than I can do with a knife. Find it online for around $10.
