Gmail went down Wednesday across the world for millions, with people in the US and UK apparently hit the hardest.
The disconnection immediately became a disruption for work flow and Gchat conversations in the thick of the US workday. The search engine giant confirmed that its extensive email network experienced a service disruption starting at 8:16 a.m. PT.
"We're investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly," Google wrote on its Apps Status dashboard. "Based on reports, it affects only Google for Work Gmail users."
Google did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.
As a suggested workaround, the company recommended disabling Gmail Service in your Admin Console UI, saving the changes, turning it back on and saving the changes again.
By 9 a.m. PT, service for a few Gmail for Work users had returned, but remained down on Google's App Status Dashboard. The company said it had identified the cause of the problem and was working on a potential fix.
"Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future," Google wrote in an update at 9:40 a.m. PT.
