Get lost in this interactive 3D Calvin and Hobbes comic strip
Step into the world of Calvin & Hobbes as you've never seen it before: as a 3D comic.
The last Calvin and Hobbes strip was published way back in 1995, but the beloved comic still has legions of fans who pore over the book collections to relive the adventures of a young boy and his toy tiger. Digital designer and 3D artist Gabriel de Laubier took a classic Calvin and Hobbes strip and transformed it into a zoomable, movable 3D experience.
De Laubier used open-source 3D graphics and animation software Blender to create the interactive strip. The strip is titled "Big Bang" and it deals with Calvin coming up with a better name than "The Big Bang." He suggests "The Horrendous Space Kablooie" as a more evocative alternative.
De Laubier renders the strip in black and white. You can blow it up to full-screen size and move the strip side to side and up and down, making it feel like you're peering into a snow globe. Since Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson is dead-set against the comic being made into a movie, de Laubier's impressive effort may be our best opportunity ever to see our heroes in 3D.
