As a general rule, I focus on laptops that are cut to the bone: entry-level models with price tags in the $300-$400 range. For many users, these machines offer sufficient horsepower.

But not for all users. If you often find yourself wishing for maximum performance, be it for games, video editing, or other demanding software, I've got a rare deal on a high-end system.

For a limited time, and while supplies last, you can snag the Toshiba Satellite S70-BST2GX2 17.3-inch laptop for $999.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code TBS70923GX at checkout, which cuts an extra $150 off the current $250 discount.

"Laptop" is probably the wrong word. A machine like this is intended for desk duty, though certainly it could travel easily to a LAN party (if such things still exist). Either way, it's about as loaded as laptops come -- and even on par with higher-end desktops.

The Satellite features an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor, 16GB of DDR3L RAM, and a 1TB hybrid drive. The screen spans 17.3 inches of 1,920x1,080-pixel goodness, and it's powered by AMD Radeon R9 M265X graphics with 2GB of dedicated memory.

Other noteworthy specs: a SuperMulti DVD drive (remember those?), an HDMI output with 4K support, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and the most important feature of all, a backlit keyboard. (I never knew how much I needed this until I started using it.) Yeah, in an ideal world, this would have a Blu-ray drive, but I suspect a fairly small percentage of users really covet that these days.

It's hard to tell from the photo up top, but this is a really sharp system -- shiny, glossy brushed aluminum with a satin gold finish.

Because this Satellite is fairly new, I haven't found any reviews to speak of, user or otherwise. All I can say that if you're looking to replace a powerful desktop with an equally (or even more) powerful laptop, here's your chance to save $400 on an attractive candidate. It's not for everybody, but it might just be for you.

Bonus deal: Game time! If you hurry, you can grab Tropico 3 for free from the Humble Store. (The giveaway expires at 10 a.m. PT.) Normally $9.99, this popular sim game puts you in charge of a tropical island. It's part Civilization, part SimCity, part Populous (if you're old enough to remember that one). Strings attached: zero.
