I'm breaking two of my own rules today: posting a today-only deal on a Friday (meaning it'll be on the site all weekend, even though it's expired), and posting a deal that's likely to sell out before I finish typing this paragraph.
Eh, rules are made to be broken, right?
Today only, Cowboom has the refurbished Sony BDP-BX37 Blu-ray player for $69.99 shipped. This is an Internet-friendly player, able to stream content from Netflix, Pandora, Slacker, YouTube, and other services.
Update: Oh, now I remember why I have those rules: it's already sold out! (For some buyers, anyway--I'm still showing it as "in stock" at my end.) Sorry, peeps. The good news is that if you want this player, it's available from a number of different sellers on eBay, many of them offering it new for just $10-15 more.
However, although the description says the BDP-BX37 is "Wi-Fi ready," it's not "ready" right out of the box. You need an optional adapter, and from what I've read, only the $80 Sony UWA-BR100 will work. Thus, if you have your heart set on a wireless Blu-ray player, there are better overall deals elsewhere.
For my money, Ethernet is the way to go, especially when you're dealing with Netflix video and the like.
In any case, the BDP-BX37 offers features like Quick Start, which promises to get your movies playing fast, and a front-side USB port for viewing photos, videos, and music. You can also use your iPod Touch or iPhone as an extra remote, courtesy of Sony's free Media Remote app. Neat stuff.
Cowboom doesn't specify the warranty for this unit, but offers a 30-day return policy. My guess is Sony will back it for 90 days, but I really don't know for sure. A little bit of caveat emptor would be wise here.
Bonus deal: I'm a big believer in battery backups, especially for desktop PC users. Office Depot has the APC Back-UPS ES 550 for $39.99 (plus sales tax). It includes eight power outlets: four with battery backup, four with just surge protection. I use one of these myself, and it's saved my bacon on more than a few occasions.
