Get a 2TB Western Digital hard drive for $69.99
Yes, there's a rebate involved, but 70 bucks for two terabytes of quiet, speedy, eco-friendly storage is worth the hassle.
Want to make your desktop faster, quieter, and greener? Need extra storage or a secondary internal drive for backups? Have I got a deal for you.
Dell has the 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green SATA hard drive for $69.99 shipped (plus sales tax in some states). That's after a $20 mail-in rebate (PDF).
Yes, I'm once again going to channel my inner fogie and say, "Why, back in my day, we paid $250 for a 250-megabyte hard drive, and we liked it." Seventy bucks for two terabytes? That's just unreal, kids.
The Caviar Green is a 5,400-rpm drive stocked with features like IntelliSeek, StableTrac, NoTouch ramp load technology, and GreenPower. All of which is to say it's quick, quiet, and an energy-sipper. Western Digital claims it consumes 40 percent less power than "standard desktop drives."
Keep in mind that this is a bare-bones, OEM drive, meaning you get little more than the drive itself--no SATA or power cables, no instruction manual, etc. Thankfully, Western Digital gives you something more important: a three-year warranty.
I know the rebate's a hassle, and this is probably more storage than most users need -- but I'm just a sucker for dirt-cheap drives. The rebate offer is good until January 16, but I don't know how long Dell will have the drive in stock.
Bonus deal: Today only, and almost already sold out, Midnight Box has the refurbished Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-ray player (with Netflix, and Pandora) for $49.95 (plus $3.99 for shipping). Click the Deal 1 tab to find it. Awesome deal if you can snag it!
