Gemstar-TV Guide files patent complaint

Gemstar-TV Guide International has filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission seeking to force Pioneer, Scientific-Atlanta, EchoStar and SCI Systems to stop importing set-top boxes that it says infringe on Gemstar patents. Gemstar has pending patent infringement suits against Pioneer, Scientific-Atlanta and EchoStar. SCI Systems supplies set-top boxes to EchoStar. In October, Gemstar reached a settlement with Motorola, whose General Instrument operation is a leading maker of cable set-top boxes. "Gemstar-TV Guide keeps an open licensing policy and has always been ready to offer reasonable licensing terms to accommodate licensee needs," said Jonathan Orlick, Gemstar's deputy general counsel. "However, Gemstar must enforce its intellectual property rights and will pursue all relevant legal processes."
