A simple app update lets you control select oven features from your smartphone or tablet.

LAS VEGAS -- If you currently have or are planning to purchase a GE Profile wall oven (specifically, model numbers PT9550, PK7500, PT9050, and PK7000), you will now be able to take advantage of an update to the free Android or iOS GE Brillion app. While the previous iteration of the app was well-designed and offered features we liked, we didn't like that you could only access it on your home Wi-Fi. This new update will allow you to preheat your oven, set your oven timer, keep an eye on the cooking status, and get updates -- whether you're home or not.

I wonder if it's entirely safe to preheat your oven when you aren't home. At the same time, this does seem like a useful smart feature designed to make your life a bit easier and your dinner prep a bit faster. Would you rather wait for an oven to preheat when you could do it in advance (before you even get home)?

We're just starting testing on the GE Profile Built-In Double Convection Wall Oven PT9550SFSS, so we'll be able to remark on this app update then, too. Good timing, GE. Stay tuned for that and for more lovely CES coverage.
