Warner Bros has announced a new remake for classic arcade game Gauntlet, coming in summer for PC via Steam and the Steam Machine.
Back in 1985, when gaming was still in its infancy, a little game called Gauntlet set the tone for dungeon-crawling RPGs in the decades to come. The top-down, four-player game saw a team of rag-tag heroes destroying mobs, shooting food, collecting loot and taking names.
The Warrior, Wizard, Elf and Valkyrie will be returning to PC and SteamOS this winter, Warner Bros has announced. The game will be getting an overhaul to mark the launch of the Warner Bros Game Vault, a new portfolio that will consist of new games based on popular Warner Bros and Midway IPs, as well as original titles.
"With Gauntlet we combined the arcade style of the original game with an entirely new look and feature set that includes emergent, local and online four-player gameplay," said Warner Bros senior vice president David Haddad. Interactive Entertainment. "Gauntlet will be the first title in the WB Games Vault portfolio, which will provide us with an opportunity to access emerging talent within the game development community and match unique skills and experience with our extensive library of properties."
Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, the game will keep the isometric format introduced in the 1991 sequel Gauntlet III: The Final Quest, and introduce new character attributes: the Warrior deals the most melee damage, the Elf is the fastest, the Valkyrie has the strongest armour and the Wizard has the strongest magic.
In addition, dungeons will be procedurally generated in order to change the gameplay up and increase replayability.
"To us at Arrowhead, Gauntlet is one of the most defining games from our childhoods, and it's amazing to be able to work with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment on a brand new version," said Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt. "Gauntlet is one of the original and best-known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece."
