David. J. Robino will now serve as vice chairman of Gateway, where he will take on additional responsibility for corporate strategy, business development and new ventures, the PC maker said today.
Robino, who will report to Jeff Weitzen, Gateway's president and chief executive officer, has been serving since Jan. 1998 as executive vice president and chief administrative officer. Robino will continue to head Gateway's legal, corporate communications, community relations, human resources and government relations efforts, among other activities.
His appointment is the latest in a series of moves designed to keep the company competitive as it strives to boost its service offerings. This past December, Weitzen himself took over the day-to-day operations of Gateway as CEO from founder Ted Waitt. Weitzen who joined Gateway in January 1998.
In 1998, Robino spearheaded the creation of Gateway's new corporate headquarters complex in San Diego, a site chosen in part to aid in attracting employees to the company. The company was formerly headquartered in South Dakota and still has operations there.
Gateway spokesman John Spelich said that one measure of the success of that move was that 10 of Gateway's top 15 corporate officers have joined the company since the opening of the new California headquarters in June 1998. Robino has also helped install programs that have maintained Gateway's corporate culture as it has grown, he said.
Prior to his turn at Gateway, Robino was with AT&T, where he was a vice president who oversaw a number of human resources activities for more than 40,000 employees. Robino was also involved in AT&T's initial efforts in e-commerce consulting, systems integration and outsourcing.
