Gateway takes eMachines to Mexico
The new desktops, priced between $600 and $715, target families, students and small businesses.
The company is now selling three desktop models--the L2541, L2814 and L2824--through chains in Mexico, including Elektra and Sam's Club. The new products target families, students and small businesses, Gateway said.
As part of a retail strategy devised since it acquired eMachines earlier this year, Gateway has moved beyond direct sales and inched into chains. Irvine, Calif.-based Gateway now competes with other PC makers, such as Hewlett-Packard, for space on retail shelves. Besides North America, Gateway has entered marketing pacts in Japan and Western Europe.
The new computers for the Mexican markets come with Windows XP Home Edition.
The L2541 and L2814 each has a 40GB hard drive, 128MB of DDR SDRAM, a graphics cards with 64MB memory and a CD-RW drive. The L2541 features Intel's 2.53GHz Celeron D325 processor, while the L2814 runs on Advanced Micro Device's Sempron 2800+ processor.
The L2824 also runs on the Sempron 2800+ and has a 40GB hard drive, a graphics cards with 64MB memory and a CD-RW drive. But it also features a memory card reader that can read eight of the most popular types of cards and has 256MB of DDR SDRAM.All the models include five USB 2.0 ports, one serial port, one parallel port and two PS/2 connections, as well as an Ethernet 10/100 local area network.
The L2541 is set for Sam's Club, while the other two models are earmarked for Elektra. The suggested prices range from $614 to $702 (6,999 pesos to 7,999 pesos).
