Nokia's N-Gage gaming service is set to close towards the end of 2010 as the company focuses its application downloads through the Ovi Store.
The announcement was made via Nokia's N-Gage game blog, where the company directs current users to the Ovi Store to continue to purchase games for their Nokia handsets. The blog informed users that the N-Gage store and N-Gage Arena will close in September 2010. Games will still be available via this service until this time and games purchased before the shut-down date will continue to work thereafter.
The big blow to fans of Nokia's gaming service is the loss of its online community features. Using N-Gage Arena, players can keep tracks of their in-game achievements and those of their online friends. Some games can also be played by multiple players using Arena. This announcement suggests Nokia is seeking ways to incorporate community features into the Ovi Store, though no solution is known at this time.
