Apple has launched a back-to-school promotion that offers a free iPod mini to U.S. students with the purchase of a discounted iBook (starting at $899), PowerBook (starting at $1,399) or Power Mac (starting at $1,799).

The offer, good through Sept. 24, is actually a mail-in rebate for $179, the student price of a 4GB iPod mini. Students can also apply the rebate to the price of a 6GB iPod mini, a 20GB or 60GB iPod, or the 20GB iPod U2 Special Edition. The "Student Union" promotion is available through Apple Stores, the online Apple Store, and campus computer stores.
