Fox apologizes for 'X-Men' promo images of Jennifer Lawrence being choked
The studio says it will remove materials that caused a social-media uproar.
Critics took to social media to complain about images like this one in a trailer on YouTube.
Movie studio 20th Century Fox apologized for images marketing its latest superhero movie, "X-Men: Apocalypse," following a social-media backlash claiming the studio was showing violence against women.
Promotional images on billboards, posters and trailers showed Jennifer Lawrence's character, Mystique, being choked by the movie's main villain, Apocalypse.
"In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn't immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form," Fox said in a statement. "Once we realized how insensitive it was, we quickly took steps to remove those materials. We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women."
