Fix for Safari on iPhone crashes: Bookmarks to blame

Ben Wilson

If you're experiencing crashes in Safari on the iPhone (MobileSafari), especially after the update to firmware/software 1.1.1, the issue may be a corrupt or otherwise problematic bookmark.

Try the following:

  • On a Mac Quit the desktop version of Safari if it is open. Navigate to ~/Library/Safari and move the file Bookmarks.plist to the Desktop or another location, then re-launch Safari. Re-sync the iPhone using iTunes and check for persistence of the problem. Failing that, create a new user account as described in this MacFixIt tutorial and sync your iPhone using it. If the problem disappears, you know that some problematic data is causing the problem, which you can then attempt to isolate.
  • On a Windows PC Quit the desktop version of Safari if it is open. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari and move the file Bookmarks.plist to another location, then re-launch Safari. Re-synchronize the iPhone using iTunes and check for persistence of the problem.

You may also want to try some of the workarounds listed in our special report on troubleshooting iPhone applications, including clearing the cache, cookies, and history. All of these items can be cleared by using the Settings application then tapping Safari.
