The illumination spell is the first phrase spoken in the first trailer for "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," the upcoming "Harry Potter" prequel that takes place in New York in the 1920s. Warner Bros. Pictures released the trailer on the company's YouTube channel on Tuesday, where it's already amassed over 180,000 views.
After the illumination spell is used to reveal the Warner Bros. logo, a woman arrives in a great hall carrying a briefcase. She warns the person in charge that a wizard, the film's hero Newt Scamander, had arrived in New York the day before carrying the briefcase, but that some of the eponymous creatures it contained had escaped.
Aside from that brief bit of info, the trailer itself isn't all that illuminating. Perhaps another lumos maxima spell will reveal more.
More likely, we'll have to wait until the release date of "Fantastic Beasts" draws nearer to learn more about the film. The film is slated for release on November 18, 2016 in the US and UK. No Australian release date has yet been announced.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" has a star-studded cast that includes Eddie Redmayne as Scamander, Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell among many others. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the movie, and David Yates, who directed a handful of the later Potter movies, is back to direct the prequel.
Hopefully these folks will come together to create a movie that really captures the magic of the original series. Now, if only we could find a spell to move us forward in time to the film's release in November.
