Firms say all is not lost

Network administrators unable to console individual users who have lost data on their desktop PCs now can get some help from Seagate and Compaq.

Network administrators unable to console individual users who have lost data on their desktop PCs now can get some help from Seagate Software (SEG) and Compaq Computer (CPQ).

The two companies announced the availability of Proactive Backup for Windows NT workstations and servers. The program helps administrators back up data that resides on client desktops, in contrast to typical solutions that address only server backup needs.

Using Proactive Backup, a protective system is initiated upon detection of an impending disk drive failure in Compaq Deskpro PCs running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation. The message is sent to the Backup Exec software, the system operator, and network administrator. The backup can be performed to a Windows NT Server backup system.

Proactive Backup is now being bundled on all Deskpro 2000, 4000, and 6000 PCs with IntelliSafe hard drives.
