Firefly's untimely cancellation is something that fans of Joss Whedon's space western will never stop mourning, but an upcoming game might salve the wound a little.

Set to arrive sometime in the middle of next year, Firefly Online is a multiplayer game currently in development that will initially be available for iOS and Android, with the possibility of expansion to further platforms. It sees the player take on the role of a ship's captain. You will have to hire a crew and complete missions both in space and planet side, all the while competing against — or forming alliances with — other players, doing whatever it takes to survive.

You'll also be able to customise your ship and keep in touch with other fans with unspecified "unique social features".

The game itself is a collaboration between Fox Digital Entertainment, QMx Interactive and mobile game developer Spark Plug Games. The announcement trailer, which first aired at San Diego Comic Con, looks great, and with a year until the game's release, we have high hopes that it won't be another tie-in disappointment. You can find out more information and register for the game here.
