Film distributor picks DivX technology

DivXNetworks says distributor Monument Video has licensed its video-on-demand service, called DivX Open Video System. Under the deal, Monument Video will sell secure video downloads at its Web site, including titles such as "Eye of the Dragon," "Cross of Fire" and "Once There Was a Ballpark." According to DivXNetworks, its service will enable people with broadband connections to purchase rentals of selected films. San Diego-based DivXNetworks developed a code that is based on the MPEG-4 video standard, a successor to the technology behind the popular MP3 audio format. The company says its technology can transfer a feature film over a high-speed connection in about 30 minutes.
