Exponential Preps Superfast Apple Chip

Exponential, a start-up funded mainly by Apple Computer, plans to deliver superfast PowerPC-compatible microprocessors in 1997.

SAN JOSE, California--Exponential, a tiny start-up funded mainly by Apple Computer, is in the early stages of building a Power PC-compatible microprocessor three times faster than the speediest Pentium.

Exponential engineers say they will deliver the technology in 1997. When it debuts, the new chip will run at 300 MHz, with later versions clocking in at 600 MHz.
