Excite Entertainment links to hundreds of entertainment news headlines, with a special section devoted to the National Enquirer. N2K's Music Boulevard came on today as a featured music site, providing music clips, content, and CD-ROM sales.
"The ultimate goal of the Excite Entertainment channel is to be a one-stop shop for consumers' entertainment interests and needs, and we continue to explore partnerships which will enable Excite to reach that goal," Brett Bullington, executive vice president of Excite, said in a statement.
The Net is seen by many services as the perfect vehicle for delivering up-to-date "info-tainment." And entertainment and news sites are core parts of many marketing campaigns for products such as WebTV, which lets users surf the Net and watch their favorite television shows at the same time.
But Excite isn't the only online service that wants to be consumers' first choice for entertainment.
In October, America Online launched its news entertainment site "Entertainment Asylum," which it calls a "one-stop interactive resource for anyone wanting to know more about the entertainment industry." AOL partners for the site include Universal Studios, Sony, CBS, Warner Brothers, and others.
Other online directories and Web sites are pushing entertainment channels as well. Infoseek, Lycos, LookSmart, and Netscape along with Yahoo, all aggregate the latest headlines from Hollywood, as well as online music guides or jukeboxes.
