Every web-sling is awesome: 'Lego Movie' guys making 'Spider-Man' animated film

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directing duo behind "The Lego Movie" and the "Jump Street" films are developing the Spider-cartoon for 2018.

The guys behind "The Lego Movie" are taking on your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in a new animated movie.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the directing duo behind "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs", "The Lego Movie" and both "Jump Street" films. They're writing the story and producing the animated Spider-Man film, but it has not been confirmed whether they will direct. The Spider-Man film adds to the pair's slate along with various writing and/or producing jobs including "The Lego Movie Sequel", "Lego Batman" and "The Flash".

The animated feature was announced this week by Sony, which holds the film rights to Spider-Man. That's why the web-slinging comic book character hasn't yet appeared in any of the current Marvel movies alongside the Avengers and chums. Luckily for fans, Sony and Marvel has come to a deal to share Spider-Man, who will now appear in films from both studios.

That new start means Andrew Garfield, star of the most recent Sony Spider-films, is out of the role of Peter Parker. The new Peter Parker is expected to make his debut in "Captain America: Civil War" in May 2016.

The next standalone Sony-produced Spider-Man movie will be released on 28 July 2017, and the animated movie will swing into cinemas a year later on 20 July 2018.

According to Sony, the cartoon film will "exist independently" of the live-action Spider-Man films. Sony has plans for a number of other Spider-related spin-offs, including outings for black-clad bad guy Venom, the team of villains known as the Sinister Six, and an as-yet-unnamed female character.
