Eastman Kodak trots out OLED kit

Eastman Kodak made the evaluation kit for its organic light-emitting diode displays available to manufacturers Monday. The $5,200 kit includes a 2.16-inch color panel, an interface board, software drivers, cables and instructions for use. OLED displays have design and performance advantages over liquid-crystal displays. Their self-luminous pixels do not require the power-consuming backlights used in LCDs, images and video are clearer and crisper, and designs can be thinner. A joint venture with Sanyo, called SK Display, will manufacture the OLED panel, while Kodak put the kit together and is offering it to customers. SK Display will have a manufacturing facility in early 2003 that will produce the displays in large quantities.
