Philips plans to release next month a DVD player/recorder that uses DVD+RW discs. The DVDR1000 can record and play TV programs and play home movies. In October, the company also plans ship the DVDRW208 DVD+RW drive for PCs, a combination drive that allows customers to record DVDs and CDs.
Last week, Hewlett-Packard announced the first DVD+RW drive, the DVD-writer dvd100i, which lets consumers create DVDs and CDs. The drive is expected to reach stores next month. According to the DVD+RW Alliance, Ricoh plans to begin shipping late next month, the MP5120A PC drive for recording onto DVD+RW and CD-R/CD-RW discs. Sony is preparing to introduce a DVD+RW drive for PCs, and Thomson and Yamaha plan to release DVD+RW recorders next year.
