Laptops are nice. They're sweet, innocent little baby PCs that let you check your email, surf the Web, and occasionally play a bit of Solitaire. They're pants for everything else though, right?
Not according to rockdirect, who recently sent us the latest incarnation of its aptly named Xtreme 64 laptop. We had some inkling of how powerful it was before we even switched it on, as it took three of us to get it out of the box.
Hitting the power button, we understood the full extent of what we were dealing with: the Xtreme 64 is the world's first laptop to use a dual-core processor. And it's not any namby-pamby, tree-hugging laptop CPU designed to save power and heal the world, it's the Athlon 64 X2 4800+, which up until last week was the fastest desktop CPU reasonable money could buy.
The Xtreme 64 has a 17-inch screen, a TV tuner, support for up to 2GB of luxury high-speed Corsair RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX Go -- the fastest graphics card you can get in a laptop.
With all this power it'll only last about ten minutes away from the mains, but it'll make a Dell XPS M170 'ultimate gaming' laptop look like a Sega Master System.
If you like big, heavy laptops that scare children and contribute to global warming, watch out for a full review next week. -RR
Update: a full review of the rockdirect Xtreme 64 is now live.
