Dropbox doubles plan sizes; intros 500GB option
Need 500GB of cloud storage space just for your own files? Dropbox can do that now.
Dropbox is getting bigger -- at least for Pro subscribers.
Thanks to user demand, Dropbox is doubling the space of its Pro 50 and 100GB plans. That means Dropbox Pro offers 100GB and 200GB for the same prices as the original 50GB and 100GB plans, starting at $9.99 per month or $99 per year.
In case that's still not enough for individual Pro account users, Dropbox is adding a 500GB plan -- also at the behest of user feedback. It runs $49.99 per month or $499 per year.
Dropbox Product Marketing Manager Anna-Christina Douglas said on the official Dropbox blog that developers actually get more feedback from families, and that this extra storage space would work well with the new photo auto-upload features.
Nevertheless, the more sizable storage options certainly make Dropbox more appealing for small-business customers and professionals who need to store large files for work and access them from all their mobile and desktop devices. Examples include housing contractors with floor plans as well as videographers and filmmakers with lots of video footage.
The updates couldn't come at a better time as the cloud storage market is becoming increasingly crowded with competitors such as Box, Google Drive, and Microsoft SkyDrive, among others.
However, team plans still start at 1TB of space, beginning at $795 per year for five users.
Current Dropbox Pro users should see their accounts automatically updated with the additional space with access to the new 100GB, 200GB, and 500GB plans this evening. Dropbox is also offering Pro users a three-month Pro 100 trial subscription to share with a friend or family member.
