Dream droid: Life-size R2-D2 gets so close to the real thing

For a price, you can adopt a droid that looks just like the one from the Star Wars movies, complete with screen-accurate lights and sounds.

So big, it's huggable.

Sideshow Collectibles

You can't actually go to a galaxy far, far away and make friends with a whistling and blooping rolling robot, but you can at least find a very close replica right here on Earth. Sideshow Collectibles has been teasing a new life-size R2-D2 from Star Wars and it's finally available for preorders.

Sideshow offered a life-size R2-D2 back in 2008, but the latest model, crafted from an all-new sculpt, is "more realistic than ever before," according to the company. It comes with lights and sounds from the movies, so you can carry on a conversation and pretend to know what R2 is talking about. A remote control triggers the effects and stashes away into a hidden compartment when not in use.

R2-D2's dome head rotates and the whole thing stands on a Millennium Falcon-themed pedestal. All told, the figure reaches 48 inches (122 centimeters) in height. All this fanciness comes at a price. The collectible costs $7,450 (about £5,600, AU$9,700).

The life-size droid won't follow you around, beam holograms or stop a trash compactor from squishing you. It will, however, impress the heck out of your Star Wars-loving friends.
