The blue chip index earlier soared 43.01 points to crawl over the 10,000 mark to 10,001.78 before heading lower again. The Dow fell 28.3 points or 0.28 percent to close at 9,930.47.
The benchmark index has been on an unprecedented four and a half year bull run, surging more than 6,000 points.
The Nasdaq Composite Index closed in positive territory, gaining 7.83 points or 0.32 percent, to 2439.27.
Technology bellwethers danced back and forth this afternoon, with some recovering from morning losses while others continued to sink. Meanwhile, the newcomers in the Internet field posted solid gains.
iVillage almost doubled its pricing range today under heavy demand for its pending initial public offering. The company increased its range to 22 to 24 from its earlier range of 12 to 14. The company is likely to set its final price as early as tomorrow and begin trading Thursday under the symbol "IVIL."
