Is it curtains for Mr. Burns on "The Simpsons?" Voice actor Harry Shearer tweeted Wednesday night that he will not be returning to the hit animated show due to his desire to work on other projects.
Shearer had been a regular cast member with "The Simpsons" since its start in 1989.
"From James L. Brooks' lawyer: 'Show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best,'" Shearer tweeted.
"This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work," Shearer added. "Of course, I wish him the very best."
"Thanks, Simpsons fans, for your support," Shearer tweeted.
Last week, Shearer tweeted his disappointment that Fox announced it was without mentioning which cast members were returning.
"Doesn't this show have a cast?" Shearer tweeted.
This is sad news for fans who have loved Shearer's voicing of the characters Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, Otto, Kent Brockman, Waylon Smithers, Reverend Lovejoy and many others since.
Fox has been contacted for comment, but did not immediately reply.
