Digital (DEC) introduced a new line of cluster-capable Prioris servers--including a dual-processor model--based on the Pentium Pro processor and the Windows NT operating system.

The models in the new Prioris HX 6000 line are designed as application servers for use in Internet-intranet environments, in medium to large databases, and as groupware in workgroup or branch office settings, Digital said.

All models include Digital's SNMP-based ServerWorks manager, which allows management of servers, clients, hubs, routers, and printers in mixed OS environments.

The series also includes technology that permits real-time monitoring of system status, including CPU, main logic board, Redundant Array Independent Disk (RAID), and power supplies. Support for Digital's Windows NT clustering solution is optional. Digital Clusters for NT can couple two servers through a shared SCSI bus and include failover and failback support for Lotus Notes databases.

The new application servers are offered with either 256KB or 512KB of on-chip cache in both single and dual-processor models. The HX 6200s come with a single 200-MHz Pentium Pro processor, 32MB of EDO memory, and a 4X CD-ROM drive. A two-channel RAID controller is optional.

The HX 6200 MPs come with a dual 200-MHz Pentium Pro processor configuration, 64MB of EDO memory, and a 4X CD-ROM drive. A two-channel RAID controller is optional. All HX systems support up to 63GB of internal storage and offer 11 expansion slots that are compliant with the I20 standard, which Digital says will reduce costs in implementing hardware device drivers.

The new servers are currently available, according to Digital, with estimated street prices ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 depending on configuration. The RAID cluster kit has an estimated street price of $8,500.
