Digital lets email speak

Digital Equipment releases a new plug-in for Web browsers that allows users to send voice messages over email.

Digital Equipment (DEC) released a new plug-in for Web browsers that allows users to send voice messages over Web-based electronic mail.

The new plug-in available to download for free at Digital's Web site.

The new software tool acts as an element of a Web page rather than a distinct application so users can click on a prompt and offer their thoughts when navigating a Web site. Requirements include Netscape Communications Navigator 3.x or Gold 3.x, Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 operating systems, an Intel-based PC with a sound card and microphone, and an SMTP email server.

"This is part of a larger strategy for Digital," Chris Weikart, a primary developer, said in a statement. "Our goal is to build an infrastructure for deploying speech applications over the World Wide Web."
