Dick Smith has announced a partnership with a major duty-free operator to open seven Move stores across Sydney's domestic and international airports.

The retailer successfully tendered for the retail locations in the international and Virgin domestic terminals which are due to open in early 2015 under a partnership deal with the Gebr. Heinemann duty-free retail group.

Unlike the traditional Dick Smith shopfronts, the retailer's chain of Move stores has a greater focus on what it calls "fashtronics" -- accessories and designer consumer electronics targeted at younger, trend-driven consumers. Dick Smith has confirmed its airport Move stores will sell "consumer electronics travel products and accessories".

Travellers will also have the option of ordering their purchases in advance, as Dick Smith Managing Director and CEO Nick Abboud explained.

"Customers will be able to buy the product they need at all seven locations or chose to click and collect, ordering online and picking up airside, increasing convenience and shopping experience," he said.

"We are extremely excited to join Gebr. Heinemann and provide Sydney flyers with their consumer electronics needs under our innovative Move store banner, whether they are computers, tablets, audio or accessories."

Dick Smith expects to open in "February/March 2015" and anticipates the airport stores will rake in sales in the order of AU$50 million for the first full year. The retail contract term is "initially" for six and a half years, with the company also exploring other duty-free expansion opportunities throughout Asia.
