Dell adds another layer to DVD burners

Dell begins offering higher capacity double-layer DVD burners as an option on several of its desktops and notebooks for consumers.

Dell has begun offering higher capacity double-layer DVD burners as an option on several of its desktops and notebooks for consumers. The company began offering on Wednesday dual-layer 12X DVD+RW drives on its Dimension 8300 and Dimension XPS desktops. Last week it introduced 8X DVD+RW double-layer drives as an option on certain Latitude and Inspiron notebook models. An 8X dual-layer DVD burner is also available in its small-size Dimension 4600C desktop. The double-layer DVD discs used by the new drives can store as much as 8.4GB, up from the 4.7GB capacity of single-layer DVD discs. Thus the dual-layer discs can accommodate longer or higher quality movies or hold more photos or back up more data for businesses.

Dell is offering the 12X double-layer DVD burner on the Dimension 8300, for example, as part of several optional dual-drive kits. A dual-layer combination CD-burner/DVD burner can be purchased in a kit that also includes a CD-ROM drive and adds $99 to the price of the desktop, which starts off configured with a single DVD-ROM drive, according to the company's Web site. Meanwhile, Dell's Inspiron 8600 offers a combination CD-burner/dual-layer 8X DVD+RW drive as a $249 upgrade from a standard DVD-ROM, the company's site shows.
