Data General has gathered the software that helps administrators set up and run servers into a collection called DG/ManageSuite. Many of the tools ship with the systems, but in some cases fancier versions will be available for extra cost, said Lisa Runci, senior marketing product manager at Data General.
"There are a lot of new little bits and pieces, but we're now pulling them in under one umbrella," Runci said.
Most of the new tools are aimed at Windows NT, she said.
"That's where we've needed more work on the management side. There hasn't been significant requirement on the Unix side, because we have a lot of capabilities in Unix built into DG-UX," the company's version of Unix, and because NT administrators often "grew up in the PC world" and aren't as technically skilled, she said.
Among the new tools:
Express Start CD that lets people reinstall system software if they need to
A remote server management card which plugs into the server and gives an administrator access to basic system features even if the operating system doesn't work.
A CD that runs software that can diagnose problems and guide users to the right tests without wasting time on the wrong ones.
Management software to control clusters of NT servers tied together to share tasks and make sure important services stay available even during crashes.
Many of the programs came from other companies, a trend that will continue as Data General fleshes out its management software strategy, she said. "We will look for tools in the NT space before we try and build it. We don't want to be reinventing the wheel," Runci said.
In contrast, the company is working on its own additions to the Unix management software, and expects to release improvements in September, she said.
