D-Link shrinks 200Mbps power-line adapters
D-Link announces power-line adapters that come in a compact design and offer speeds of up to 200Mbps.
D-Link today announced its three new power-line solutions, the PowerLine AV Mini Adapter (model DHP-310AV), PowerLine AV Mini Adapter Kit (DHP-311AV), and PowerLine AV 4-port Switch Mini Adapter Starter Kit (DHP-348AV).
All of these new devices come in a compact design that's much smaller than similar products of the same standard. Unfortunately, they offer throughput speeds of only up to 200Mbps. Other power-line products on the market, such as the Netgear XAV5501 or even the D-Link AV 500 switch, support the faster 500Mbps power-line standard.
Nonetheless, the new adapters will make a great wireless alternative for the far corners that a Wi-Fi signal can't get to. They are also more than fast enough for general Internet access needs and most casual networking applications.
D-Link says that its new power-line devices will work well with existing network-ready devices such as its Boxee Box, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and computers. They also work well with other power-line devices, especially D-Link's hybrid D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine router.
The devices' compact size means that they won't obstruct adjacent power plugs, making it easier to use other appliances. None of the new devices offers a pass-through power socket, however, meaning you likely can't use them at the corner where there's only one outlet. They do have features commonly found in other power-line devices, such as indicator lights and a one-button security setup.
D-Link's new power-line products are available now. The DHP-310AV adapter is priced at $60, and the PowerLine AV Mini Adapter Starter Kit (DHP-311AV), which includes two DHP310AV adapters, is slated to cost around $110. The most expensive product, the PowerLine AV 4-Port Switch Mini Adapter Starter Kit (DHP-348AV), which includes one HDP310AV adapter and a four-port power-line switch, will cost $130.
