CyberManCD Brings Multimedia to Portables

At PC Expo, PacRim Labs previewed its CyberManCD, a portable CD-ROM drive with an integrated 16-bit wavetable sound card. The drive will be available in August.

According to company officials, the $499 CyberManCD Model CM2-SB lets notebook users run CD-ROM applications with sound and video. It connects to a notebook via a PC Card Type II (formerly PCMCIA) interface and transfers data at 350 K/sec, officials claimed.

Previously, notebook users who wanted multimedia had to buy a separate CD-ROM drive (typically with a parallel-port or PC Card-to-SCSI interface), and a separate sound card.
