CSC goes on shopping spree in Italy

Services firm Computer Sciences is expanding deeper into Italy, scooping up four more information technology services and consulting companies there.

Services firm Computer Sciences is expanding deeper into Italy, scooping up four more information technology services and consulting companies there.

The companies, Progres 2, Progres Iniziativa, Progres Progetti, and Progres Veneto, will operate under the new name of CSC Progres and will be headquartered in Milan. Earlier this month, CSC acquired Turin, Italy-based Informatica Group.

CSC Progres will report to CSC's U.K.-based European Group. Financial terms of yesterday's acquisition were not disclosed.

The four companies posted 1998 revenues of $62 million and employ approximately 700 information technology systems and consulting professionals.

About 70 percent of the Progres group's revenues come from systems integration and application development, with the remaining business generated by software and hardware sales, outsourcing, and consulting.

With the newly acquired companies, CSC continues to strengthen its presence in Europe, the company said.

Last fall, CSC acquired KPMG Peat Marwick, a Paris-based management consulting firm. In December, the company bought Pergamon Gesellschaft Pergamon fur angewandte Informatik, a German IT consulting firm specializing in financial services, as well as SYS-AID, a Netherlands-based consulting and services firm with more than 260 employees in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.

Informatica has revenues of $30 million and more than 500 employees focused on IT services for banking, financial, telecommunication, insurance, and public sectors.
