As if to test the waters, along comes a UK ad for a company called Persona Synthetics. It provides helpers who are faster, stronger and just generally more capable than, well, you.
This is because they're synthetic. In this case, Sally is a teacher, a helper and a friend. She does look a little like Damien's mom from "The Omen," but please don't let that put you off.
Sally has a perfect British accent and, being artificially intelligent, she can pull of British stiff upper-lipped stoicism even better than a flesh-and-blood Brit.
Creativity tells me that the real purpose (for now) of this ad is to launch a new TV series called "Humans." This is about a robot population that has humans as its domestic slaves. (I made the whole of that sentence up.)
In truth, it stars William Hurt and is about people buying synthetic humans for themselves and living happily ever after.
There's even a real-life store allegedly opening, in which (presumably) synthetic goods will be on display.
This campaign is clearly providing an enormous public service. We must begin to acclimate ourselves to the world that we're creating.
Nirvana will only be reached, though, when we can't decide whether our helpers are the synthetic beings or we are.
