Crave TV: Sony shows off 11-inch and 27-inch OLED TVs

If you're a TV geek, Sony's announcement that its OLED screens are finally on sale (in the US) will no doubt excite you. If you aren't a TV geek, you'll still love the sheer brilliance of this TV when you eventually see one in the flesh.

What makes OLED such a showstopper is the brilliance of the technology. It's small, thin but incredibly bright and colourful. Sony points out that OLED TVs have an impressive viewing angle too. What's more, it has no backlight and is incredibly energy efficient.

It's no slouch in terms of performance either -- our brief time with the TV at the Sony booth proved that OLED is finally coming out of the labs and becoming a saleable product. The TV boasts a remarkable claimed contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, and the demo footage proved it can display incredible amounts of detail.

Although the 11-inch TV is ready, there's no word on when larger sizes will become available. The 27-inch technology demo on the stand looked brilliant, however, and we can only hope Sony releases it soon.

If you want to get your hands on one of the first OLED screens in the world you'll have to pay a honking great premium. The 11-inch OLED screen costs $2,500 (£1,250) and is on sale via Sony's Web site -- if you're in Vegas you'll be pleased to learn you can pick one up today from the Forum shopping centre at Caesar's Palace. -Ian Morris
