Cop arrests beaver perusing fake trees in a dollar store

Holiday shopping went to the rodents this week when a store called in the sheriff to take a baffled beaver into custody.

Usually, destructive behavior inside a store is a serious offense, but a dollar store in Charlotte Hall, Maryland had to deal with a very different sort of criminal on Monday. Store employees called in the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office to apprehend a wayward beaver.

The Sheriff's Office shared a series of photos of the furry perp on Twitter and Facebook. The best shot shows the beaver standing on its hind legs with its front feet up on a row of boxes of fake Christmas trees. It's a poignant display of futility for the tree-munching rodent.

The Washington Post had perhaps the best headline for the incident: "Beaver walks into Md. store, finds only artificial Christmas trees, and proceeds to trash it."

Other photos shows some minor mischief with products strewn on the floor and the beaver inspecting the wares on the shelves. There's no word on whether or not it was just trying to get its holiday shopping done.

There is a happy ending to this story. The beaver did not spend any time in the county jail. The sheriff tweeted, "All joking aside, the beaver was safely rescued by animal control & was released to a wildlife rehabilitator." A video with the tweet shows the beaver getting gentle scritches around its ears.

Caught in the act.
