At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, this week, app maker ALK Technologies is showing off its most recent additions to its CoPilot GPS app, a free app with downloadable maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and directions. The company has added two new features that aim to make your commute better.

The first new feature is CommuteMe, which learns your daily commute route as you drive, tracking the streets and freeways you prefer to use. Once it gets a good picture of your daily commute to and from work, it will start to alert you about traffic problems on that route. It can even give you estimated arrival times based on traffic conditions. If your commute changes, that app will adjust the route.

Next, CoPilot GPS gets ActiveRoutes, a feature that tells you the fastest routes from point A to point B at any given time during the day. ALK Technologies says it uses real-time traffic speed data to give you the fastest journey.

While both features are welcome additions to an app that didn't wow us when it was first introduced, it's going to be tough for any company, including ALK Technologies, to compete with the bigger GPS players, including Nokia, Telenav, and Garmin.

There's also Google to contend with, which purchased much-loved GPS app Waze in 2013 and soon after folded much of the company's GPS and traffic-reporting features into Google Maps. Google Maps also has the benefit of coming pre-installed on Android phones, which often makes it a first choice for Android users.

Still, if you're looking for an alternative GPS app for your Android device or iPhone, CoPilot is worth checking out for its downloadable maps and new features.
