At Comdex, hardware and software manufacturers are scrambling to tie this year's magic word--Internet--into their offerings, even if it means repackaging, adding features to existing products, or bundling them with other companies' goods and services.
One example is U.S. Robotics that today announced a Net connection kit to be packaged with selected Sportster desktop modems. The kit will include the modem, a book about the Web, browser and email software, and offers from three Internet providers. The company is including the additional items free inside specifically marked Sportster boxes.
Other companies are beating the rush by releasing free versions of products not yet ready for the marketplace. Beta versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 2.0 browser and NCD's Mariner Net organizer for Windows can be downloaded from the companies' respective Web sites.
